Shortage of skilled workers in NRW
According to the IHK Fachkräftemonitor NRW, there is currently a shortage of 350,000 skilled workers. The largest share of 305,000 (around 87%) is accounted for by vocationally qualified workers. The shortage of academically qualified workers is 44,000 (about 13%).
Since the challenge of recruiting skilled workers is essentially demographic and many skilled workers from the baby boomer generation will retire in the next few years, the shortage could grow steadily to about 1,300,000 by 2035.
The shortage is divided between about 1,200,000 (92%) professionally qualified and 103,000 (8%) academically qualified workers. The bottleneck is therefore currently and increasingly among those with vocational qualifications.
